270 TOUR BOOKINGS

New Hotel At Glacier About 30,000 people could travel over the Haast Pass highway during its first 12 months, the Minister in Charge of Tourism (Mr Eyre) said at Franz Josef last night. He was speaking at the opening of the new Franz Josef Hotel. “It is difficult to estimate the number of visitors expected to travel through this region once the road has I been opened,” he said. “During the next 12 months betwee i 270 and 280 coach tours have been scheduled to i travel through the new route. In other words the major coach operators have sufficient faith in the attractions in this region to reserve accommodation for almost 8000 people. Coach tours comprised less than 30 per cent of guests who stayed at the Tourist Hotel Corporation’s hotels, Mr Eyre said. “Clearly then, the West Coast is about to enjoy a tide of tourists of a magnitude hitherto unknown in this part of New Zealand.”
