C.W.L Council Meets

Delegates from 18 institutes and about 150 members attended the half yearly council meeting of the Canterbury East Federation of Country Women’s Institute held at O’Kains Bay recently. Among specially-invited guests were representatives of the North Canterbury and Canterbury Federations, the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, and the Maori Women’s Welfare League. Mrs A. Thacker, convener of the Peninsula group, welcomed the visitors. Remits carried included one from Le Bons Bay Institute “that more formal English be taught in schools,” there was a discussion on the widespread prevalence of cruelty to children, and methods of prevention. Twenty-four bonnets and 48 pairs of bootees, which will be given to hospitals, were handed in for the competition. Winners were: bonnet: Hornby

A very fine display of needlework done by members of the Peninsula Group of Institutes was of high standard and greatly admired. The guest speaker was Mr M. Thacker, who displayed Maori costumes and handwork, and showed slides of old Maori canoes and artifacts discovered in the North Island. GLENTUNNEL VISIT Fifty-six members of the Springs-Paparua group of the Canterbury East Federation of Country Women’s Institutes travelled to Glentunnel recently for their half-yearly outing, and meeting. men’s Institute recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary. Mrs V. Curragh, the president, welcomed visitors from neighbouring institutes and divisions.
