TRAINING COURSE

Boys’ Brigade Leaders Many boys’ brigade officers and life boy leaders from most parts of Canterbury and Westland are expected in Christchurch today to hear the New Zealand Boys’ Brigade president (Mr M. T. Dearsley) outline the Haines report, which has been altered to suit New Zealand conditions. A combined training course, the first for many years covering such a wide area, will be held in conjunction with the visit.

The Haines report is the result of findings and the recommendations of a special committee which was set up in England to investigate the methods and system of the brigade with the view to its modernisation where necessary. The New Zealand version calls for adoption within three years and will be put forward at the Dominion council meeting in Wellington next January. Mr Dearsley is touring New Zealand and meeting as many members of battalions and groups as possible. This is expected to be the largest and most representative gathering of brigade members in recent years. Leaders and officers from Timaru, Ashburton, Greymouth, Christchurch and Rangiora areas are expected to attend. The course will be held in St. Stephen’s Church lounge and will be opened by Mr J. L. Bush, the Canterbury battalion president and member of the brigade Dominion executive. The theme of the training course is “Looking and Learning.” Demonstrations will include safety with firearms by the police, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, firemen’s class, physical activities and company drill. The course will end with a lecture and illustrations on aids to instruction.
