Election Inquiry

(New Zealand. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Oct. 29. A petition was filed in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today, seeking an inquiry into the conduct of the election of councillors for the borough of Newmarket earlier this month. The petition was lodged under section 66 of the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1953. Six petitioners are named.

They say that Carrick James Corry Brown—one of the persons declared elected as a councillor—was not qualified to be elected as his name did not appear on the district electors’ roll. They ask that one of the petitioners, Edna May Halloran, the only other nomination for the election, be declared elected. The inquiry will be held on November 9.
