Magistrate's Court Man Fined £l5 And Licence Cancelled For 18 Months

A car which had been signalled to stop after a microwave speed check had first slowed, then accelerated, turned twice and travelled about 500 yards without lights before stopping at traffic lights, Traffic Officer W. Nicholas told Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Alan Wayne Boyd, aged 25. a panel beater the driver of the car, had been charged with driving at a speed which might have been dangerous. He was fined £l5 and his licence was cancelled for 18 months. Traffic Officer Nicholas, in evidence, said about 8.10 p.m. on August 26 he had checked by microwave at a speed of 50 miles an hour, a car travelling west along Woodham road. The car was signalled to stop using an illuminated sign. The car had slowed and then when about level with the patrol car accelerated away turning into Worcester street and then into Wyon street. When about half way along Wyon street the car’s lights bad gone out. It travelled about 500 yards along that street at 40 m.p.h. without lights. At the Buckley’s road intersection he had been able to get alongside the car and speak to the driver as it was stopped. Traffic Officer Nicholas said.

DISQUALIFIED DRIVER Denis Bernard Moller, aged 19, a kitchenhand (Mr G. R. Joyce), pleaded guilty to a charge of driving on October 10 while disqualified. He was convicted and remanded for sentence on Friday, bail being allowed.

Moller on October 15 consulted his solicitor and they then called at the traffic office where Moller had volunteered that he was a disqualified driver, the court was told.

He had been convicted in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch on July 6, 1965, of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous, and was fined £lO. About 10 days later he was disqualified for three years and fined £25 on a charge of dangerous driving.

Traffic Officer H. J. McMorran said that Moller had been stopped while riding a motorcycle in Olliviers road. When asked for his licence he had said it was at work. He was then requested to produce it in seven days. STOLE BICYCLE

A 60-year-old war pensioner, Ned Tewehi, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in six months if called upon on a charge of stealing a bi"ycle, valued at £lO, the property of a person unknown. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant P. J. Alty said that on October 26 the police had found the cycle at the defendant’s home. It had been dismantled and was in the process of being repainted. Tewehi said he had found it near his home on October 23 and took it because he was out of money. REMANDED

Kenneth John Townsend, aged 19, a foundry worker (Mr K. M. Hampton) appeared on a charge of using threatening language in Cathedral square on October 23. He was remanded till November 4, bail being allowed. Peter John Luxford, a commercial fisherman, appeared on a charge of assaulting Charles Douglas Powell on October 26. He was remanded till November 4, bail being allowed.

George Roger Henshaw, aged 46, a farm labourer, appeared on a charge of being idle and disorderly ion October 23. He was remanded till Friday, bail being allowed. Stanley Duke, aged 36, a workman (Mr Glue), appeared on a charge of driving on October 25 while under the influence of drink or a drug. He was remanded till Thursday, bail being allowed. Arthur Cable Muller, aged 56, a Post Office employee (Mr Glue), appeared on a charge of driving while under the influence of drink or a drug on October 24. He was remanded till November 4, bail being allowed. Graeme Francis Swift, aged 30, a butcher (Mr Glue), appeared on a charge of driving while under the influence of drink or a drug. He was remanded till Thursday, bail being allowed. Andrew Docherty, aged 26, a carpenter, was remanded on bail to October 28 on a charge of false pretences involving £5.

Edward John Watson, aged 49, a railway worker, was remanded on bail to October 28 on a charge of driving i under the influence of drink jor drugs in Wharenui road on October 22.

Donald lain Ross, aged 36, a workman, was remanded on bail to October 28 on a charge of driving under the influence of drink or drugs on the State highway, Halswell, on October 23.

Whangarepo Hiku, aged 20. a woodworker, was remanded on bail to November 4 on a charge of driving under the influence of drink or drugs in Lincoln road on October 23. A man whose name was suppressed was remanded to November 25 for a report under the Mental Health Act when he appeared on a charge of assault.
