Long Interest In Maori Subjects
The newly-appointed principal of Te Waipounamu Maori Girls’ College, Miss Avis Suckling has had a lifelong interest in Maori history and culture.
Yesterday, Miss Suckling said she was thrilled with her new appointment, which she takes up next February. “I’m keenly interested in young people. They keep you awake.”
Miss Suckling has had plent}- of experience in dealing with young people. She was a teacher until her retirement several years ago. During that time she taught Maori children in Tauranga. “Actually I was at Maketu where the Arawa tribe landed when they came to New Zealand. I loved the work.”
Miss Suckling has also had administrative experience. She was a supervisor at the nurses’ home in Christchurch and was for 18 months in sole charge of the preliminary nurses’ home at Princess Margaret Hospital.
At present Miss Suckling is assistant matron at Rangiruru School.
