U.S. Hopes ‘Improved’
(N.Z P.A -Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 26.
The prospect for ending the Vietnam war on teems which were in the national interest of the United States had greatly improved during 1965, Mr McGeorge Bundy, President Johnson’s special adviser on security affairs, said yesterday.
Addressing a meeting of businessmen and civil leaders. Mr Bundy said “the prospect of a military collapse (in
South Vietnam) has disappeared.” Although it was impossible to predict at the moment when there would be a settlement of the war, the “prospect for ending it in our national interest has greatly improved during this year.” Mr Bundy attributed the changed military situation mostly to the increasing combat role of U.S. ground forces ar Jie increasing use of air power against the Viet Cong. The possibilities for the Viet Cong to operate in units larger than battalions were decreasing. But he said it was probable that the guerrillas would change the shape of their activities and that the American and South Vietnam-
ese troops might face a “very difficult time” of small-scale guerrilla fighting.
