Cold Wedding Day Recalled

Fifty years ago today on a chilly morning after a fall of snow the previous night Miss A. Schimanski and Mr J. J. Blackburn of Marshland were married at St. Mary’s Church, Manchester street.

Mr and Mrs Blackburn will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary today with a Mass and a small family gathering at their home at 469 Marshland road, just across the road from the home they lived in after their marriage. “1 was born in the cottage just along the road,” said Mrs Blackburn yesterday, “so 1 have lived in the district all my life,” Mrs Blackburn's parents came from Poland, and were early Christchurch settlers.

Four years before their marriage Mr Blackburn, who was born in Kaiapoi returned from a stay in Australia and settled down to farm in Marshland.

“After the children grew up we retired to this home, and began our travels,” said Mr Blackburn. The Blackburns have had a trip to Britain and the Continent, travelled with a caravan around Australia, and are planning a trip to Japan and America next year.

Fishing, particularly for salmon, has been their favourite pastime, and Mr Blackburn still keeps up his interest in the sport.
