Children In Shops

Sir, —There was a notice in a shop: “Parents are responsible that their children do not interfere with articles in this shop.” Too right, they are. But this is the first time anyone seems to have said so. In a supermarket today, three small children, whose mother, pushing a pram containing another, was engaged in conversation with some acquaintance, were having a lovely time dipping into the deepfreeze and running about with whatever they managed to extract. Some time ago a woman came into a dairy shop with a small girl who immediately started fiddling about with anything in reach. Inevitably, there was soon a resounding crash and a whole pile of sweets and biscuits cascaded to the floor. Not unnaturally, the proprietress of the shop took a pretty dim view of this performance, and said so. The only satisfaction she got from the mother was, “They oughtn’t to have been there.”—Yours, etc., ILAM. October 19, 1965.
