N.Z. Plan To Sell During Sydney Trade Fair Visit

The 35-man party of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association to leave for the Sydney International Trade Fair today will represent a diversified selection of industry in Canterbury, said the association's president (Mr C. W. Mace).

The industries represented, he said, include engineering, building materials, timber, paintbrush manufacturers, clothing, electrical manufacturing. and electro-plating. Mr Mace was speaking at a reception given by the Australian Trade Commissioner in the South Island (Mr M. G. B. Coultas) to both the association’s delegation and that from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Mr Mace said he was particularly pleased that eight council members of the association were able to join the manufacturers’ delegation. Seeking Labour The association’s secretary (Mr R. T. Alston), who will accompany the mission, said that while he was in Australia he would try to recruit labour for Christchurch clothing and electrical industries. He said a large number of the manufacturers’ group were taking samples to Australia with a view to selling on the Australian market.

The delegation, he said, was not only a visit to the trades fair but a selling mission as well.

Mr Alston said that a number of representatives in the delegation were also interested in buying materials and I machinery in Australia. I The Manufacturers’ Asso-

ciation’s delegation comprises: Messrs R. H. Stewart (leader). R. T. Alston, Il W. Revell, E. P. Chapman. ,1. D. -Bull, J. R. Maddren. R D. H. Steel, W. J. Garrett. R. \ Anderson. A. K. Dann. R. Thompson, and B R. Smithers. Some delegates will be accompanied by their wives. “Forward-Looking”

The leader of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce delegation to the fair (Mr B. J. Drake) said that the chamber was sending over a team that at first sight might not be quite as powerful as that from the manufacturers' Association. The chamber’s delegation, he said, had a forward look —the chamber was taking quite a lot for young men who would be the Christchurch businessmen in a few year's time.

Mr Drake said that one of the significant features of the chamber's delegation was that it was taking two men particularly interested in primary industry who were associated with a well-known stock firm. “Unfortunately so many of our members are more in the nature of importers,” he said “If they went they would probably come back with bright ideas.” Mr Drake said that this would be of little benefit because of import licensing.
