Cabriere Fancied For Waverley Cup

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Apart from Cabriere, a last-start winner, the field for tomorrow’s Waverley Cup is so open that an accurate assessment is almost impossible. Cabriere won at Hastings. Behind him were the subsequent winners, Diacol and Carnmor, and the place-getters Pursuit and Foxy Boy.

At Hastings, Cabriere carried 7-11 and in the Waverley Cup he has 8-12. He has carried big weights previously. Le Plus is a good horse, but could do no better than fourth in a weaker field at Stratford Other Stratford failures were Acis (needed race), Tardini (always plodding), Howe Good (slipped saddle), Solly Joel (walking short after the race), Conspirator, Spab, Bon Voyage and Lady Dilemma. Spab and Lady Dilemma were in sprints, and will probably be better in the longer Waverley Cup. There are many likely prospects otherwise. Maria Mitchell is proved up to one mile at Trentham and Avondale, so the extra two furlongs on the smaller track should be within her scope. Worthy Chat disappointed at Otaki, weakening near the end. His hack form earlier and his open win at Marton were more promising. Drawn Wide Surf Boy and Vigour are in excellent shape and Surf Boy, after his Hawke’s Bay fourth, would merit first or second favouritism if he had not drawn wide Saturnian could follow in the the steps of his stablemate, Bagush. Both are hurdler-high weight horses, but Bagush won an open handicap at Stratford on Saturday, the same day as Saturnian finished a sound second under 10-8 in a highweight at Masterton. Saturnian will drop 421 b at Waverley. Friendly Miss, which has drawn well at No. 7, Is capable of leading all the way as she has done previously. She looked good in her two sprint starts this season, at Marton and Otaki. Near Time has not raced since July. She appeared, however, at the Foxton matinee, and ran an excellent race for third. Plantation was second and Royal Admiral fourth, so the subsequent form of these horses makes Near Time look good. Magician, on the other hand, has had recent racing, blit with no result. At his last start, instead of racing near the lead, he settled down and finished

quite strongly for ninth in a field of 18. The Waverley Cup is the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg is the Brewer Memorial Handicap, for which Royal Admiral, Croydon’s Gold and Alkira are fancied.
