“The Press” In 1865
October 13 ST. MARK'S, OPAWA.—The ceremony was performed yesterday by the Lord Bishop of Christchurch, assisted by the Venerable Archdeacon Jacobs, the Revs. Mr Wilson, Dudley, Willock, and the Incumbent, the Rev. Mr Cholmondeley. The attendance was a very large one and included the greater portion of the parishioners. At half-past eleven the Bishop entered ’ the church with the clergy and churchwardens, when the petition signed by the Incumbent and Churchwardens, praying that he would consecrate the church, was read by the Rev. Mr Cholmondeley. This Bishop then signified his consent
to consecrate the church, and proceeded with the attendant clergy along the nave towards the Communion table, repeating the 24th psalm. The Bishop and clergy went up to the Communion table, and the officiating minister, the Rev. Mr Cholmondeley, proceeded to the reading desk. The deed of conveyance was presented to the Bishop, and laid by him on the alter. After which followed the special prayers and collects for the consecration of churches. The Bishop read the memorial, signed it, and ordered to to be enrolled and preserved amongst the muniments in the registry.
