BRAWLS AT CAR RACE

The behaviour of part of the crowd of 20,000 people at the national saloon car meeting at Pukekohe was criticised today by officials of the meeting. Several brawls broke out among youths and at least two needed ambulance attention. Police officers took a number of names. Mr H. M. Davies, a senior executive member of the New Zealand International Grand Prix Association, who is also in charge of the circuit p - paration, said there had been far too much drinking by the younger section of the crowd. “We picked up more beer bottles and cans after that race meeting than after any Grand Prix day,” he said. At one stage of the sixhour race, youths "zero throwing firecrackers on to the track. This hazard to the drivers was quickly stopped by officials.
