MR STURT SPEAKS

Mayoralty
Mr J. Sturt, who has t?en nominated by the Workers' Action Movement as a mayoral candidate, told a pub lie meeting of 18 nersons last evening that Christchurch was a shambles containing only one or two buildings of anv architectural beauty. The attitude of the city fathers, he said, was responsible for the lack in Christchurch of anv of the features of the New Zealand character He said he wanted Christchurch to be known as the most New Zealand of New Zealand c’ties. rather than the most English. He included in the platform of the Workers’ Action Movement a plan to make better use of rates. He said he could not promise a reduction because of inflationary trends, but he would see that the rates were used for the benefit of the city. Mr Sturt charged the City Council with failing to promote industry in Christ"hurch, and said that the Mayor (Mr Manning) was not 'iving up to his position of leading citizen.
A regional planning committee. he said, had been instituted to provide soft jobs for more persons.
