Favourites Win Maiden Races
Danny Kaye and Bunker were successful favourites in maiden races at Ashburton yesterday. Danny Kaye had a well-earned first win for his Christchurch owner. Mr D. Leslie, in the Wakanui Maiden Stakes. This followed an exasperating run of minor placings, the most recent being a close second to Pharasal on the first day ol the Ashburton meeting. Danny Kaye, a showy chestnut colt by Copenhagen 11, is trained at Riccarton by G. S. Barr, who secured him for 500gns at the national sales in 1864
He drew one of the wide barrier positions in the Wakanui Maiden Stakes, but was not forced over much ground. After taking a short lead inside the furlong he won by three-quarters of a length from Miloutin. which had to change his ground to get a run in the (straight. Cranford just saved third from the second favourite, Gunga Din, which had trouble in matching the early speed of the others, and did not have a troublefree run when improving in the straight. Lady Sabaean was close fifth. EARLY RETURN Bunker was having only his second start from the stable of G. H. Murfitt, jun., when he won the Mt. Somers Maiden Stakes.
The stable apprentice. J. Messent, rode the Dogger Bank gelding patiently in the middle of the small field. It was fairly late when he was brought forward to challenge, but the little resistance shown by his rivals made it easy for him in the last halffurlong. He won going away by two lengths from We’ll Find Out. which was ridden at the tail of the field to the home turn. Jan’s Joy was a neck back
third. She was responsible for much of the pacemaking, but ran rather greenly and shifted ground towards the middle of the track in the straight
