Carlton Mill Bridge Traffic

Sir,—I reiterate I. H. Stringer’s protests in September 13th’s “Press” about Carlton Mill bridge traffic. The Traffic Superintendent claims that there is sufficient width of road to allow convergence to one lane after the bridge provided it is done “in a courteous manner.” Who is going to be courteous in the rush when one side of his car is forced into the gravel to dodge bumps, lampposts and parked cars protruding just enough on to the roadway to arouse anxiety? Suppose he survives the rush and reaches the Fendalton road corner, then what? Surely, for safety’s sake and to prevent drivers from becoming annoyed, which probably leads to risks, the road from Riccarton roundabout to Carlton Mill needs widening, smoothing, levelling to remove the hump in the middle, marking into four lanes, and a roundabout at the Fendalton road corner. Such a plan needs urgent implementation as is testified by the number of letters on the topic.— Yours, etc., P. N. RUSSELL. September 13, 1965.
