The Somme
Sir, —In a timely manner, your correspondent M.T. draws attention to the now seemingly forgotten Battle of the Somme, 1916. This surely must rank as one of the . most ferocious battles ever fought in any war, and in it the New Zealanders bore themselves magnificently with the finest troops of the British. Army. The conditions were just as set out by M.T., and the sight and sound of the battle was simply awe-inspiring. Even today I can recall the corpselittered ground and solid walls of bursting shells. Morale of all ranks was of the highest, and this inferno of battle was the last earthly sight of as gallant a company of men as ever faced a foe—we could do with their descendants today. —Yours, etc., QUERCUS. September 11, 1965.
