Worker Buried In Clay Trench
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, September 13.
Workmen dug frantically for about 15 minutes this morning but failed to save the life of a young man buried under a fall of heavy clay on an Auckland building site. The man was
Anthony John Guilfoyle, aged 24, a carpenter, single, of Mount Albert.
He was shovelling clay in a trench forming part of the foundations of a new building off the upper part of Pitt street.
A leading hand, Bruce O’Callaghan, who had been working with Guilfoyle, had climbed out of the trench a
few minutes earlier to get a plumb from a nearby shed. “I was just coming back when 1 saw the side of the trench fall in,” he said. His workmate was covered by the clay. Mr O’Callaghan called others, who started digging.
The buried man was found against the side of the trench, apparently suffocated. Mr O’Callaghan said he understood the dead man was single, but was planning to get married next year.
