Replacement Favoured

WELLINGTON, Sept. 13.

The recent case of the depletion of the New Zealand Universities Rugby team was tonight quoted by leading soccer officials as a good illustration why replacements should be allowed in soccer. The world soccer body, F.I.F.A. is asking all member nations for their views on the subject and tonight’s meeting of the New Zealand Football Association’s management committee agreed that it favoured allowing a replacement up to the fortyfourth minute of play or the goal-keeper at any stage. “In the interests of the game this is a must,” said the chairman, Mr R. S. Smith. “You only have to look at what happened in that Rugby match in Auckland to see that the whole thing can be spoilt. “But once you get past half-time the question of the new man being fresher than the others arises.”

Stewart Wins Italian G.P.

Jackie Stewart won the Italian motor racing Grand Prix at Monza yesterday, with a record average speed of 130.46 miles an hour. Stewart finished just over three seconds ahead of Graham Hill, of Britain. Both were driving B.R.M.’s. Jim Clark (Lotus), who was already assured of the world championship, led for most of the race, but went into the pits with mechanical trouble after 64 laps.
