Tennis Association’s Stand On Affiliation

The management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association will refuse all affiliated clubs and subassociations permission to play unaffiliated clubs and subassociations during the 1965-66 season.

Concern was expressed at the practice of some clubs in playing unaffiliated clubs in the past, at a committee meeting last evening.

The committee should not merely suggest to affiliated clubs that they do not play unaffiliated clubs, said Mr A. D. Atkinson. “We should lay down a policy before the matter arises.” “The constitution says we must await applications from the clubs,” said Mr F. G. H. Johnstone, chairman of the committee. “We should still make a definite policy now and treat every application the same way,” said Mr R. Brown. ’This will stifle any criticism that we are being inconsistent."

A motion was passed ‘That the management committee refuse permission for affiliated clubs and sub-associations to

play unaffiliated clubs and sub-associations during the 1965-66 season." Junior Programme

"It Is hoped to cater for an under-13 section on Saturday mornings." said Mr Brown, chairman of the junior association. This would replace the primary grade held in the past. Competitions will still be held for the under-18 and under-15 grades but undtr-18 games will be held each afternoon.

Mr Atkinson, chairman of the competitions committee. said any player more than is minutes late for competition matches would automatically default his singles match.

Where both players were late the match would be cancelled

Tennis Week

"There is never any tangible evidence of the results of Tennis Week until membership figures come in late in the season." said Mr B. W. Crofts, C L T A. secretary.

"I feel that the organisation Could begin earlier so as to give the clubs more time to make arrangements.” he said

it was decided to hold Tennis Week in 1966 at about the same time as this year. The Christchurch City Council has approved the line-draw-ing of the Wilding Park Squash Club courts.

Mr R. Murphy was elected to the management committee, un opposed. Messrs R. E. Heenan (presl dent of the Ellesmere Sub-associ ation) and W. Lewthwaite (president of the Banks Peninsula Sub association) were nominated to represent Canterbury on the New Zealand Lawn Tennis As sociation.
