Prices For Hereford Bulls Improve At Temuka

There was a very much improved demand for bulls at the third annual bull sale and show held at Temuka by the South Island Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association. Whereas last year only 43 per cent of the bulls which came into the ring were sold under the hammer, on Thursday the percentage of sales was higher than 90 per cent and the average price rose by more than 25 per cent.

Altogether 29 bulls of all ages were offered to a large gallery and 27 or 93 per cent found buyers at auction. The average price was nearly 225gns compared with a little more than 179gns last year for the 22 out of 51 which were sold in the ring. Six of the seven two-year-old led bulls were sold at auction. They realised from 165 to 500gns and averaged 289gns. This year’s average for this class of bull represented an advance of about 50 per cent on last year’s sale when nine bulls averaged 192gns. Top price of this sale was paid in this section for an entry from L. N. James, Strathavon, Middlemarch, Otago who was competing for the first time with a bull bred by E. T. Buckley, of Te Kuiti. Mr N. R. King of the Skipton stud, Fairlie, paid 500gns for this bull which the show judge, Mr H. K. Rendell, of Otorohanga, selected as the best two-year-old led bull and the champion of the led bulls. Mr Rendell liked the size of this animal. Last year’s top price for a led bull and top price of the sale was 350gns. Mr James farms a property of 4500 acres at Middlemarch ranging from 700 ft to 2000 ft above sea level and runs 150 head of cattle including about 70 studs, and 3000 mainly Romney - Corriedale sheep. Heathstock Downs, Ltd., of Hawarden, which sent forward a very strong and successful team of bulls for the show and sale, sold a two-year-old led bull, Heathstock Oberon, to High Peak station for 335gns. It was second in its show class. CLEAN SWEEP Heathstock cattle made a clean sweep of the awards in the run bull section, their pairs of bulls filling first, second and

| third piacings. AH these six I bulls were by the former suc- | cessful herd sire Kaitoa OlymI pic, and were carrying some im- : ported blood. At the subsequent sale one of the first place winning pair sold for 420gns to Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd.. Gore, for the Salvation Army Training farm, and one was bought by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., for R. Campbell, Glen Djiu, North Canterbury, for 320gns and another by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan (Greymouth) for 3Dogns. The six making from 240gns upwards averaged a good 302igns. Twenty unled two-year-old bulls were sold at auction out of the offering of 21 for prices ranging from 135gns to 420gns at an average of 210*gns. This average represented an improvement of about 38 per cent on last year’s average of 152gns for 11.

Apart from the Heathstock bulls the next best price was 230gns paid twice for entries from H. G. Jamieson, of the Allandale station. Fairlie. A single four-year-old from the Skipton stud, Cattle Valley, Fairlie, was sold for 130gns. Mr Rendell was impressed with the run bulls which he said overall were good sized heavy boned bulls of a type that was wanted to leave the steers required today. They were also active and sound in the feet. In presenting the trophies won at the show, Mr Rendell noted the varying types of cattle required over the years and the sires needed to give these cattle. Before the war he said that steers had been taken to three-and-a-half and four-years-old. Then had come the demand for earlier fattening cattle suitable for the chiller trade and imports had been made to provide the quick fattening characteristics. Now the requirement was for both early fattening and weight and the rather bigger bulls seen at yesterday’s sale and show to those favoured a few years ago were coming near to the type that was required today. A group of yearling bulls were entered for showing only and Mr Rendell gave the top award here to J. L. Falconer and Company, Patearoa. This was a very nice solid bull with good hindquarters said the judge. Piacings in the show classes were made as follows: Led two-year-olds: L. N. James, 1: Heathstock Downs, Ltd., 2: H. G.
