Mariner IV Checked (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PASADENA, Sept 1. The Mariner IV spacecraft is radioing back to earth pictures of black space as a eheck on the accuracy of photographs which it took of the planet Mars on July 14. Scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Pasadena, where the pictures are being received, want to check whether smudges which appeared on some of the Mars photos also show up on the latest pictures. If they do, they will know that the smudges do not represent a feature on Mars but are caused by a flaw in the camera system. Mariner is now some 11 million miles beyond Mars, In an orbit around the sun, and about 170 million miles from earth.
