“The Press” In 1865
September 4. FOOTBALL.—The match between eighteen members of the Christchurch Club and twenty-five of the different Volunteer Companies, came off on Saturday, in Latimer square. The games were well contested, and ended eventually in favor of the Club, the members of which had all the advantage of having previously played together, whereas the Volunteers had been picked out of the various companies without previous practice.
COMMERCIAL.—We have still to note a dull market for most descriptions of imported goods, but sales are not pushed, and prices show a rather firmer tendency. Some of the large Australian firms have had representatives visiting Christchurch, with a view of establishing branch businesses; these gentlemen seen sanguine of a great and general development of trade as soon as the West Coast road is opened, and are negotiating for the purchase of business sites in good situations.
