Girl Attacked In Breezes Road
A girl, aged 15, was attacked by a man in Breezes road last night. He attempted to strangle her with a cord. Her screams roused a resident from his bed, and the assailant made off.
The attack occurred at 9.45 p.m. Police put a patrol car eordon round the Breezes road-Pages road area. The dog van and all available cars were put in the Aranui-Brighton district. A taxi-driver heard the screams and saw a man running away towards a car. The assailant threatened to kill her if she did not submit to his advances.
The man was lurking in the street when the girl got off a
bus. A doctor was called to the girl's home. A 52-year-old woman was attacked in Linwood Park in darkness on July 30. She was grabbed about the mouth and thrown over and the man struggled with her on the ground. The assailant ran off when two other persons came into the park.
More recently, a girl was molested in Linwood avenue, and girls frightened by a man in Bromley Park. Linwood Park is about a mile from the intersection of Pages and Breezes roads. On Friday night, August 13. a girl was attacked [in Halswell road and badly knocked about. Police dogs followed the scent of the assailant for a considerable distance. but lost the scent when it began to rain. Intensive inquiries have been made by detectives into the series of assaults. The Chief Detective, Mr S. B. McEwen, was called on duty after last night’s attack.
No arrest had been made early this morning.
Abandoned.— The Japanese fishing vessel Hoyo Marti No. 7 has been abandoned off Kandavu Island, south of Suva. The vessel went on a reef off the island two nights ago.—Suva. Aug. 25.
