Heretaunga Wins Hockey
Heretaunga College won the I secondary schools’ hockey tournament at Ashburton yesterday when it beat Waimea College in a play-off by three goals to nil. Waimea College had taken Heretaunga by surprise in their match in the morning, winning 5-4. Results:—Waimea 5. Heretaunga 4, Westlake B.H.S. 2, Taupo 2; Ashburton A 5. Ashburton B 1. WANGANUI WINS Wanganui Boys’ College finished off its movements much better, and as a result beat Marlborough Boys’ College, 4-1, in the final of the secondary schools' hockey tournament at Wanganui yesterday, reports the Press Association. Marlborough actually spent most of the game on attack, but several shots were missed, and hesitancy in the circle cost several other goals.
Results: Section A. Wanganui 4, Christ’s College 1: Freyberg 1, Lytton 1; Christchurch West 7, Ruapehu 1. Section B.—Marlborough 5, Wanganui H.S. 1; Wanganui Collegiate 2, Papanui 2; Colenso 4, Wellsford 2. Final points for section play were: Section A.—Wanganui Boys’ College 9, Christ's 1, Lytton, West 6, Freyberg 3, Ruapehu 0. Section B. —Marlborough 10, Colenso 7, Wanganui H.S. 6, Collegiate 5, Papanui 2, Wellsford 0. The team selected from the tournament to play Wanganui this morning is: P. Andrews. D. Bowen, F. Halstead iPapanui), R Uttley (Christ’s). HOROWHENUA LEADS Horowhenua College still leads the secondary schools’ hockey tournament being played at Levin. It has won three games and drawn one. Yesterday’s results. —Horowhenua 3, Otaki 0: Kuranui 11, Motueka 1: Horowhenua 4, Gisborne 4; Otaki 3, Motueka 1. DRAWN FINAL Tauranga Boys’ College and King’s College drew 2-all in the final of the New Zealand secondary schools’ hockey tournament. which ended in Tauranga yesterday. Other results: Tauranga 3. Cashmere High -School 2: King's 3, Napier 0: Papatoetoe 4, Rangiora 0: Maharangi 2. Manure wa 1. WON SECTION Section play was concluded in the Hamilton tournament - with as expected Christchurch Boys* High School and Auckland Grammar being clear winners of sections A and B.
However, section C and D both provided tense dramatic final games. Otago Boys’ High School beat Hamilton High School in section C by a penalty corner after a goal-all draw. Linwood High School beat Mt. Albert Grammar in Section D by a goal scored in extra time oh a swampy ground and a failing light.
