MONKS NOT FOOLED
I Woman Lands On Mt. Athos (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SALONIKA (Greece), Aug. 25. A seasick fisherman’s wife landed on the forbidden shores of the all-male monastic peninsula of Mount Athos yesterday. The monks j were not fooled by her masculine dress and called police. The fisherman, Mr Theodore Lykaki, disclaimed all responsibility after the police took his wife, Eleftheria, into custody for violating the strict rule against females. Mr Lykaki said his wife began insisting she was seasick and demanding “Let me off quickly,” when they were off Mount Athos.
He told the police he argued with his wife. “I can't. You know no women are allowed ashore there,” he said.
But when she got sicker and more insistent Lykaki resignedly put her ashore in his clothes.
If convicted, the woman could receive a two months’ gaol sentence.
