Potatoes To Be Sent To Sydney
Negotiations for the shipment of up to 6000 tons of potatoes for table use in Sydney have been completed, and it is expected that the first shipment of 2000 tons will be loaded within the next 10 days.
This was announced yesterday by the chairman of the New Zealand Potato Board (Mr W. M. Williams), who said in a statement that all shipments must arrive in Australia before the end of September. “At the invitation of the New Zealand Potato Board, the Australian importers and a committee of the New Zealand Grain and Produce Merchants’ Federation met in Wellington to conclude arrangements for export of the proposed 6000 tons of potatoes to Australia for general consumption,” Mr Williams’ statement said. “All Australian quarantine regulations must be met for the consignment, the only change being that, instead of the potatoes being washed and treated in New Zealand, arrangements have been made with the Australian import-
ers to carry out the treatment in. Sydney,” Mr Williams said. “The potato board, merchants and producers are most emphatic that nothing other than the very best number one grade potatoes should be exported,” he said. Mr Williams paid a tribute to the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall), and the officers of his department for their assistance during the negotiations.
