LONG BEACH (California). Aug. 10. “Miss New Zealand,” Janice Barkley, had a narrow default win over “Miss Argentina” today in a 100-yard elephant riding competition at the “Miss International” beauty pageant at Long Beach. Miss Barkley, aged 19, and “Miss Argentina,” 25-year-old Alicia Raquel Arruabarrena, mounted elephants brought to Long Beach specially for the occasion. Miss Arruabarrena, apparently lacking sufficient traction in her yellow stretch pants, began to

slip off at the 75-yard mark as her ton and ahalf mount lumbered towards the finish. Miss : Barkley, aboard 12-year-old Bimbo, claimed victory, but acknowledged that she had prior experience in such matters. She has ridden in elephant races in her home town of New Plymouth. The pageant is now entering its final phases. Late tonight “Miss American Beauty” will be selected from 15 American finalists, and then the title of “Miss International,” won by the Australian, Tanya Verstak, in 1962, will be decided.
