LONDON. August 11.
The 80-year-old widow of Sir Winston Churchill was upset last night over the theft of jewels from her bedroom.
The thieves, dressed as window cleaners, had entered the room on Tuesday where Lady Spencer Churchill had been staying in the London flat of her grandson, Mr Winston Churchill, and had stolen gems worth £l5OO. “Lady Spencer-Churchill is very upset about the loss of the jewels,” said a secretary last night. “They were all of sentimental value. One piece especially was of great sentimental value.” Lady Churchill had worn them when accompanying her famous husband at parties and receptions. After the death of Sir Winston Churchill last year the Churchill home in Hyde Park Gate, London, was put up for sale and Lady Churchill recently acquired a smaller home, a five-bedroomed flat nearby. While it was being redecorated she was staying with
her grandson, a radio announcer and writer. The thieves entered the house wearing overalls and carrying buckets and window cleaning equipment. They had entered Lady Churchill’s unoccupied bedroom. grabbed the first jewels they could find and then fled. Not all Lady Churchill’s gems were taken, the secretary said tonight.
