“STANDARD MILK”

Solids Added Before Sale (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 11. The chairman of the Milk Board, Mr L. V. Phillips, told the annual general meeting of the Town Milk Producers’ Federation in. Wellington today that a recent amendment to the food and drug regulations had been brought down providing for the marketing of what was called standard milk. This was milk in which milk solids might have been added to raise the solids-not-fat content to the legal minimum. This had to be specifically labelled. “With this provision now made it seems certain that the Health Department will now take steps to compel the minimum of 8.5 per cent solids-not-fat to be strictly observed in all consumer sales,” said Mr Phillips.

He said if it became necessary in an area to add solids to milk to comply with the requirement, he hoped that it would be regarded as a temporary stopgap only and that means would be found to attain the objective by natural means.
