CARDIGAN BAY WINS
Nearly Locked On Rail (N.Z.P.A.-Rcuter —Copyright) YONKERS (New York). The New Zealand pacer; Cardigan Bay, won the one and a half mile Dan Patch race at Yonkers Raceway on Thursday night, finishing strongly in 3min 06.4 sec. The nine-year-old gelding was the 3/5 favourite in the race. At the top of the stretch he was in fourth place and seemed to be locked on the rail behind his New Zealand stablemate, Oreti, before Stanley Dancer shook him loose, found room and took the leaders one by one.
Oreti had led for the first mile and a quarter giving up the lead to Cold Front briefly in the stretch. Second at the finish was Fly Fly Byrd, three-quarters of a length behind Cardigan Bay. Third was Cold Front, three-quarters of a length behind Fly Fly Byrd. Smoke Cloud, another New Zealand horse in the eighthorse race, finished seventh. It was Cardigan Bay’s sixth start this year and his second won. He has won 59,250 dollars (£N.Z.21,160) so far this year. But he has been having trouble with a foreleg and a splint was removed recently. Dancer said he plans to race Cardigan Bay next week at the Brandywine Raceway, Wilmington, Delaware.
