£18,000 Given For Children’s Pool

AUCKLAND, August 6

Mr J. R. Butland, managing director of J. Butland Proprietary, Ltd., has given £lB,OOO to the Auckland branch of the Crippled Children Society to build an enclosed swimming pool at its Auckland headquarters.

Part of the pool will be used for therapeutic exercises and treatment and the other for swimming lessons. It will be heated for use all the year round. Mr C. Mackay, president of the Auckland branch, said the generous gift had surprised and thrilled the society. There were almost 300 children who would receive great benefit from the use of the therapeutic pool. Gifts to charities and educational bodies totalling more than £lOO,OOO have been made by Mr Butland in the last three years. Last November, he established the Butland Medical Foundation for postgraduate medical fellowships with £40,000 and at the same time gave £lO,OOO to the Auckland University for marine research. In 1963, he established the Butland Music Foundation with £20,000 to encourage music students. In 1962, on behalf of the Butland-Fawcett Trust, he gave £20,000 toward extending the Roskill Masonic village as well as £2OOO to the Auckland Medical Research Foundation.

After the war. Mr Butland returned more than £77,000 to the British Governmental! the profit his company had made on a British wartime contract for supplying cheese.
