VACANCIES—PROFESSIONAL WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL WATERWORKS ENGINEER APPLICATIONS are Invited for the position of Waterworks Engineer to the Waimairi County Council. The position is one of considerable responsibility, the Waterworks Engineer being responsible for the maintenance and operation of 6 main pumping stations, and over 100 miles of mains. The population of the County is 50.000 and is increasing at the rate of approximately 3000 per year, with the result that extensions to the present system are required to be designed and constructed. It is not essential that the applicants be Civil Engineers and qualified Engineers from other branches of the profession would be considered providing they have a sound knowledge of hydraulics and pumping equipment. Studies of the University. It is hoped that the appointees can take up duty early in 1966. CHAIR OF CHINESE The Chair of Chinese will become vacant in August, 1965, following Professor N. G. D. Malmqvist’s acceptance of an invitation to the Chair of Sinology at Stockholm University. The professor will be head of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. Candidates should Jiave a thorough knowledge of classical and modern Chinese and a good knowledge of Engl'i'S'h and be actively engaged in research. CHAIR OF JAPANESE The Chair of Japanese was established in 1964 but not filled. The professor will be head of the Department of Japanese Applicants for the Chair are expected to be fluent in the Japanese language, to have a broad knowledge of Japanese literature, history and society and to be actively engaged in research in one of these fields. READER OR SENIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER IN JAPANESE A post of Reader in Japanese will become vacant in September, 1965, following Associate Profesor Ackroyd’s appointment to a Chair in the University of Queensland. Candidates are expected to have broadly similar qualifications as listed above for the Chair. An appointment may be made at the level of senior lecturer or lecturer if there are no suitable candidates for the readership. Applications are therefore welcomed from persons interested in these levels of appointment. The Faculty of Oriental Studies offers courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (Oriental Studies), Master of Arts (Oriental Studies) and Doctor of Philosophy.
