SALMON TRAP
Dual-Purpose Replacement An improved type of salmon trap should be installed on Glenmariffe stream, a south bank tributary on the upper Rakaia. by next February, said Mr M. Flain, scientific officer of the South Island section of the Marine Department’s technical field service Mr Flain said yesterday the department had a trap operating for last season’s spawning run. but it took only adult salmon. The new trap would not only take adult fish on their way upstream to spawn, but would take the smoult on their way to the sea. In March, the department’s men kept a 24-hour watch on the trap during the main run and valuable records were obtained. The new dual-purpose trap should be operating for this season’s run to provide a wider range of information.
