Supreme Court Sentenced On 49 Charges Of False Pretences

Eden John Grainger, a 39-year-old sawmill hand, was gaoled for two years by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday on 49 charges of false pretences. He had previously pleaded guilty to the offences in the Magistrate's Court and been committed for sentence. His Honour told Grainger he had qualified for preventive detention and could expect to receive it if he offended again. Having made the effort to keep out of trouble for six years it was a pity he had not sustained it. An order was made that £lO9 found in Grainger’s possession be distributed among the complainants on a pro rata basis. NINE MONTHS’ GAOL Nine months' imprisonment was imposed on Donald Trevor Charles Gardner, aged 35, a workman (Mr W. A. Wilson) associated with Grainger on 14 charges of false pretences, and one charge of wrongfully signing a telegram. He had previously pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court and been committed for sentence. His Honour said he was prepared to take into account to a certain extent that Gard-

ner had been led on by Grainger. He ordered that he be placed on probation after re lease from prison and that £39 be distributed among the complainants.
