Medical Institute Report Disturbing

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 5.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today he would be disturbed if recent reports regarding the all-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi were true.

He was asked at a press conference to comment on the statement made on Tuesday by the Medical Superintend-ent-in-Chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr. L. McH. Berry). Dr. Berry said the institute, to which New Zealand had contributed more than £1 million under the Colombo plan, was very disappointing. He reported staff were doing good work under great difficulties and conditions were appalling.

Mr Holyoake said today he had not received a report on the institute. He explained that once New Zealand had made gifts and grants they came under the jurisdiction of the recipient government. Great care was taken, however, to determine how grants would be used before any were made. The Prime Minister said that when many research grants were made there were bound to be a few not working out as satisfactorily as others.
