FREE TRADE AREA
Opportunity For Debate (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 5. Parliament would have the opportunity to debate the proposed limited free trade area between Australia and New Zealand before any agreement is signed, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today. He said after Government caucus it was “practically certain” more legislation would have to be passed before any agreement could take effect. In any case, Parliament would be given the opportunity to debate the issue. Mr Holyoake said he envisaged the agreement would be signed this year, but definitely no-t immediately after ministerial discussions, even though agreement was reached. It would be a considerable document needing some days of preparation before it could be physically ready for signature, Mr Holyoake said.
