Resignations From Council Demanded

<A’ew Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, August 5,

Resignations of three members of the St. Kilda Borough Council were called for by the Mayor (Mr R. S. Jones) at a meeting of the council last night.

Mr Jones tabled a report alleging that a deliberate attempt was made by three councillors to coerce two others to boycott a special meeting on July 14 so that a quorum would not be obtained.

The meeting was to consider applying to the Local Authorities Loans Board for sanction to borrow £9OOO for

alterations to the borough offices and Town Hall. “Three members did not attend themselves but apologies were received from them and

Ino doubt they could have been bona fide," Mr Jones's report said. “This type of conduct, if these allegations are true, is nothing short of despicable to say the least. “Fortunately, the two members who had pressure brought to hear on them refused to take part in this childish and irresponsible act. “If this position as stated to me is correct then 1 respectfully suggest that the three members concerned are not worthy of their seats at this council table and unless these allegations are incorrect 1 call on you to resign and leave the running of the borough to those who genuinely have the interests of the borough at heart,” he said. The report as received by the meeting did not mention any names. It was discussed and a motion that the council accept the report was carried on the Mayor’s casting vote. The council decided by 6 votes to 4 to apply to the Loans Board for £9OOO for alterations to the offices and building.
