Tahiti Welcomes Bomb Tests

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, August 6,

The people of Tahiti do not wish to stop the French atomic bomb tests in the Pacific, according to the president of the Tahitian Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. Herve) who arrived in New Zealand on holiday.

He said the tests could have only good’effect on the economy of French Polynesia. “The economic consequences of these tests will be very interesting,” said Mr Herve. “There will be many men required to operate the project and their work will stimulate the work and economy of the Tahitian people.” Only two weeks ago in Tahiti, Mr Herve spoke with Mr Francis Perrin, a French atomic physicist, winner of

the Nobel Prize for physics in 1926 and the present High Commissioner for Atomic Energy in Paris.

“Mr Perrin is convinced that there is absolutely no danger to the population from fall-out,” said Mr Herve. Mr Herve is in New Zealand with his wife and their two children, Phillipe, aged 12, and Genevieve, aged eight. Also travelling with them is Miss J. Sicurani, wife of the Governor of French Polynesia, and her two children.
