Minister’s Warning To Drivers’ Union
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 6.
The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said tonight that he was seriously concerned at the action of the Wellington Drivers’ Union in calling a stop-work meeting of between 800 and 900 Wellington truck-drivers next Tuesday.
“This stoppage will seriously disrupt industry throughout the Wellington province, and 1 appeal to the drivers to abide by constitutional procedures to resolve any grievances which they may feel exist,” Mr Shand said. “In view of the serious consequences of this threatened stoppage, I must warn the union that if, as a result of the meeting to be held on Tuesday, a decision should be taken to strike for the purpose
of compelling the employers to agree to the union’s demands regarding wages, 1 shall have no option but to consider cancelling the union’s registration under the I.C. and A. Act.”
