Maori Carving Sales ‘Unfair’ “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Aug. 6. New Zealand had a growing industry that exploited tourists by selling stereotyped so-called Maori carvings as souvenirs, according to an Auckland schoolgirl. “It’s infair,” said Te Aroha Henare, of Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, “since it pays no justice to a form of expression more than 600 years old.” She said the solution was to retain as much of the real carving as possible “so as to distinguish its form from totem poles.” Te Aroha was one of eight competitors in the Auckland final of the Maori oratory contest held at the Post-primary Teachers’ College.
