TRAINEES TO PLANT TREES

Parties From Waikeria (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 6. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said today arrangements had been made for selected borstal trainees from the Waikeria youth centre to plant trees on a Maori Affairs Department development block to the west of Lake Taupo. The inmates would camp in the area. Mr Hanan said selected Kuratau and Hinana stations would be planted with Douglas fir as a soil conservation project, and the work would give protection to the Whareroa stream, a vulnerable trout spawning tributary to Lake Taupo. About 80,000 Douglas firs would be planted. The work would begin on August 16 and would take about four weeks. The inmates selected would be in two parties, each party staying in the area two weeks, with an officer from the youth centre supervising.
