Swimming Official Transferred

/CANTERBURY swimming v will be the poorer for the transfer from Christchurch of Mr T. J. Whitta, a former secretary-treasurer of the Canterbury Centre and an active administrator and coach. He has been appointed Postmaster at Reefton.

A quiet, unassuming man, Mr Whitta accomplished a vast amount of work in many phases of the sport. His duties as secretary-treasurer of the centre cut deeply into his time, but he was still able to do some coaching—the New Zealand representative, William Brown, was one of his pupils—and conduct calisthenics classes.

Both Mr Whitta and his wife played vital roles as officials at carnivals and their daughter and two sons were prominent competitors in the Riccarton club. One son, Phillip, showed particular promise as a diver. The Whitta family will be warmly welcomed to Reefton swimming circles, for an enthusiastic committee is planning to install heating and filtration plants in the town’s baths. Mr Whitta, no doubt, will be eagerly sought by the local club for his knowledge and experience.
