Sunburn Beads A string of glass beads that produced small blisters on the skm of the wearer was submitted to the National Radiation Laboratory for testing for radioactivity. It was found that the beads were not radioactive, but were capable of focusing the sun’s rays into a series of small spots which i apparently caused localised sunburn. The case is reported in the laboratory’s annual report. Home, Sweet Home “We have had 26 homes in five different countries, and have chosen Gleniti as the most suitable place to make our final home,” said Mr K. Wilson, whose application for a temporary connexion for building purposes was granted by the Downlands Water Supply Committee yesterday.— (F.0.0.R.) Foggy Morning After a foggy, frosty morning the weather in Christchurch yesterday was fine and sunny. A frost of eight degrees was recorded at Harewood and seven degrees at the Botanic Gardens. Temperatures recorded at Harewood were 31 degrees at 6 a.m., 31 degrees at 9 a.m., 37 degrees at noon, 44 degrees at 3 p.m. and 44 degrees at 4.15 p.m. The temperature recorded at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. was 46 degrees. The temperature on the Government Life Building at 4.30 p.m. was 46 degrees. Sports Items Sports items attracted interest at the Christchurch Boys’ High School board meeting yesterday. The headmaster (Mr C. F. S. Caldwell) said that eight sets of stacking stands (each holding 34 persons) had been ordered for spectator occasions, the first XV would now get a match with King’s School, Sydney, during its visit to Australia in the second-term holidays, and the senior monitor (John Christianson) had been chosen as a Canterbury hockey representative. The board expressed pleasure at all three items. Water Hazard “What do you call that—a water hazard?” said the chairman (Mr D. C. Doake) at a meeting of the Downlands Water Supply Committee yesterday. He was commenting on a request by the Pleasant Point Gymkhana Committee that the water trough beside the race track in the domain be shifted to a site near the trees—which would be a safety measure for trotting competitors, and which would also eliminate a hazard for members of the golf club — and that a connexion be provided from the same pipeline to the gymkhana building, thus, giving a good water supply. The application was approved.—(F.O.O.R.) Starved Departments In the submissions which the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association would make for higher gen-eral-purposes grants, firm facts and figures were wanted, says a letter now being received by all member boards. It was known that some boards had surpluses but it was also known that these had been achieved by “starving” some departments to get capital funds for such projects as gymnasiums. ’Flu At Burnham There will be no passingout parade for members of the National Service intake at Burnham Military Camp this week-end. Instead, because of a minor outbreak of influenza at the camp, servicemen will leave for their homes on Tuesday, and so informally end 14 weeks of basic training. On Wednesday the men returned from jungle training on the West Coast. The cancellation of a formal parade, planned for Sunday, was to prevent the public from being exposed to the outbreak. Bad Lighting Users of the Provincial Council Chamber agree that its lighting and acoustics leave much to be desired. At a taxi licensing inquiry yesterday morning, conditions were at their worst for lighting, and one of the lawyers concerned said he would ask the Law Society to try to get better lighting. The lawyer recalled that special lighting had been installed for special occasions.
