Pit Stops
The 24-hour touring car race at Spa recently was won by a works BMW 1800. The highest-placed British car was a Mini Cooper S which finished fourth. * £: :S Formula vee racing is attracting much interest in Europe. Developed in the United States, it is based on the use of unmodified Volkswagen 1200 engine, gearbox, and suspension in a small racing car. The 100 m.p.h. cars are being offered for sale in Europe for about £550. The first formula vee racing to be held in Europe took place at Zandvort before the Dutch Grand Prix.
The annual meeting of the Rallies and Trials Enthusiasts’ Club recently was told that membership had increased by 81, nearly 100 per cent, in the last year. The club’s financial position was very good, and a branch had been formed in Auckland. Mr N. Mahoney was elected president, Mr B. Wilson vicepresident, Mr M. A. WhiteJohnson chairman of rallies, and Mr R. W. Bell club captain. Other officers included Mr R. Gregory, Mr B. Sharp and Mrs M. Sangster.
Development of the new 3-litre Maserati engine, which may be used for the 1966 formula one, is said to be proceeding well. The unit will be a Vl2 with fuel injection and transistor ignition.
