RECITAL OF LIEDER

Vitality And Clarity Miss Rosamunde Connal, accompanied by Mr Maurice Till, gave a recital of Heder by Schubert, Brehms, and Woif in the University Hall yesterday afternoon. It was a splendidly chosen programme. Both artists performed with stylish polish and acute understanding of style. Tempi were chosen with appreciation of the nature of each work, giving the required vitality and preserving natural clarity. Romantic colour and expression. with nuances which kept every phrase shapely and glowingly alive, were all appreciated by the large audience which sought and found this pleasant oasis in the day's travel. Miss Connal has a voice produced so that bright resonance is always present at any level of volume, and so that there is an even quality throughout her extensive range. There are no shadows in her tone, and she always has supporting power in reserve. The human warmth that this music needs was there in every phrase; and there was an exemplary legato style to carry all the life-giving colour on its broad way. Each song was charmingly interpreted with nothing of brilliance lost in those demanding dramatic fire, nor lack of bloom in those of more tender appeal. The subtle changes of colour and character demanded in Brahms's “Liebestreu,” were cleverly and convincingly conveyed. The programme was too long for each item to be considered in a necessarily short review, but each deserved appreciation for the skilled care and understanding given to fine details. —C.F.B.
