THE DIERVILLAS are a genus of deciduous shrubs, native to North America and now including the Asiatic species Weigelas. Sometimes referred to as bush honeysuckle (they are related to the honeysuckle), they are more commonly known as the flowering apple blossoms. Very free flowering, the blossoms are five-lobed at the mouth and somewhat resemble those of foxglove. The leaves are opposite, ovate, long-pointed and short-stalked. They are quite hardy and will adapt themselves to most conditions. Weigela rosea, as Diervilla florida is mere usually known (shown above), is a very attractive, deep pink flowered species which hails from China. It is of spreading habit with arching stems and will attain a height of between six and eight feet.
