Umbrella Runner

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) KINGUSSIE (Scotland), Aug. 5. Wearing a raincoat and carrying an umbrella, the Australian marathon runner, W. Emmerton, yesterday completed his first 200 miles in his John o’ Groats-to-Lands End record-breaking attempt. But the umbrella and the raincoat hampered his running and the 44-year-old salesman from Launceston was 64 miles behind schedule. United Press International reported. Emmerton, who is trying to beat the 1961 record of 15 days, 19 hours, 32 minutes for the 900-mile run, set by an Englishman. F. Musgrave, has met with rain, hail and snow. But he hopes to make up lost time by running 80 miles a day instead of his present 50. Yesterday, he escaped serious injury when a five-ton lorry came over the brow of a hill at high speed almost mowing him down. “1 had to jump for my life,” said Emmerton, who was described as white faced and shaken after the incident. “I ended up sprawled in a ditch,” he added. His only injuries were sev-

eral bruises and small lacerations inflicted when he dive! off the road.
