GIPSY FIRE
Trial Start Likely The Woodville trainer, E. Ropiha, had high hopes yesterday of a start for Gipsy Fire in the Trial Hurdles at Riccarton tomorrow. Gipsy Fire gashed his head —the wound required 10 stitches—in a float on Tuesday, but he was showing no ill-effects of the experience when exercised at Riccarton yesterday. If Gipsy Fire starts he will almost certainly be favourite. He has earned high marks for versatility in winning over hurdles and on the flat in the last few weeks, and is regarded as one of the top prospects of the big band of North Island horses brought south for the Grand National meeting. The Trial Hurdles is the second leg of the on-course double tomorrow. Southern Cloud, a stablemate of Gipsy Sire, is one of the stronger fancies for the Enfield Steeplechase, the first leg of this double. Hoss and Facade are other form runners to give the North Island powerful representation in the Enfield. Retief was scratched yesterday for the Enfield, and his stablemate, Copper Tan was taken out of the Trial Hurdles. William David is an unlikely starter in the Enfield and his stablemate, Sabell. will probably drop out of the Winter Cup field.
