IMPORT OVERLAP

Board Asked To Report (IV.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON. August 5. The Tariff and Development Board will inquire into the possibility of introducing a 15-month period in which goods could be imported. A notice in tonight’s Gazette says the board “has been requested by the Minister of Industries and Commerce to : inquire into and report on the question of desirability of introducing an overlap period of three months in the import licensing year and on the various implications of any such action.” The hearing will be held on September 28 in Wellington. The proposal would give importers 15 months in which to use their licences. The final three months in which the licences could be used would extend into the next import licensing year and would give importers greater latitude in having their goods landed (at present the ship must arrive within the year, which ends on June 30) and accounting for seasonal demand.
